What is Rezūm Therapy?
Having trouble going to the bathroom because your prostate is enlarged? Rezūm™ is a new way to treat it without surgery. It uses steam to shrink the extra tissue in your prostate, making it easier to pee. The procedure is done in a doctor’s office, and you won’t need any cuts or stitches.
What conditions are treated with the Rezūm procedure?
Prostate trouble is common in older men (over 50). The prostate is a gland near your bladder that can get bigger and block the pee tube (urethra). This can make it hard to pee or even control your pee. Rezūm is a treatment that uses steam to shrink the prostate and make it easier to go to the bathroom.
What are the potential benefits of Rezūm therapy?
Rezūm therapy is a safe, effective treatment for BPH with good long-term results. Other potential Rezūm procedure benefits include:
- You no longer need to take BPH medications.
- Many people see improvement in their BPH symptoms within a few weeks.
- It’s an outpatient procedure (you can go home the same day as the procedure).
- You don’t need general anesthesia.
- It preserves sexual function.
- Quick recovery period.
- You can repeat the procedure if your BPH symptoms return.

Healthcare providers may not recommend Rezūm if you have:
- Kidney function complications.
- A urethral implant.
- A very large prostate (over 80 grams).
Procedure Details
They’ll make sure your bladder is empty and use medicine to numb the area where you pee from (urethra) and your prostate. Then, the doctor puts in a thin tube with a special tip that uses steam to shrink the bumpy parts of your prostate. The steam gets rid of some cells, making the area smaller. You’ll wear a little tube (catheter) for a few days to help you pee while any swelling goes away.
What is the downside of Rezūm?
Healthcare providers may not recommend Rezūm if you have:
- Pain or discomfort while peeing or ejaculating.
- Peeing more than usual or having more urgent urination.
- Blood in your pee (hematuria) or semen (hematospermia).
- Urinary tract infection (UTI).
- Your penis doesn’t release semen when you reach sexual climax (dry ejaculation).
- Narrowing of your urethra (urethral strictures).
- Bladder stones.
